Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is the most commonly requested cosmetic dental procedure in the US. It is a very effective and non-invasive way to make your smile look more youthful, healthy and attractive. The treatment is relatively affordable and simple.  It can be done in-office or at-home, or both.

Why professional tooth whitening?

It is normal for your tooth enamel to gradually accumulate stains as you age, even if you brush and floss faithfully. However, the discoloration process can accelerate and become more obvious if you regularly consume coffee, tea, red wine, dark colored fruit juices or soda, or if you use tobacco products. Over-the-counter, retail whitening products may help to reduce the appearance of surface staining, but many patients prefer the faster, more dramatic and longer-lasting results of professional whitening.

What’s involved?

Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, and not all patients are suitable candidates. Consequently, we recommend that your first step be a hygiene appointment (to remove tartar, plaque and surface stains), followed by a dental examination.  Dr. Solomon or Dr. Sergerie will determine your suitability for a successful whitening and will evaluate the replacement of any old fillings or crowns.  The placement of restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the shade of your newly bleached teeth.

(Most professional tooth whitening procedures, both in-office and at-home, use a special peroxide gel as the bleaching agent. Some patients experience tooth sensitivity during or immediately after the procedure, but this is usually mild and resolves quickly.)

Patients who want a quicker, brighter result choose in-office whitening. This procedure occurs during a scheduled office appointment lasting about two hours. During that time you can sit back and relax, watch TV or listen to music. We use a laser lamp to enhance the speed and effectiveness of the gel, and we protect your gums and lips to minimize or eliminate any discomfort or irritation. Although individual results vary, many patients see an immediate dramatic improvement with the in-office option. (As an added bonus, all in-office whitening patients also receive custom-fitted trays and gel – as described below – for touch-ups at home.)

At-home whitening occurs at a time and place of your own convenience, but can take up to a few weeks to achieve maximum results. You will receive a custom-fitted impression of your teeth and a supply of professional strength peroxide gel. A small amount of gel is dispensed into the upper and lower tooth trays and these are then worn for a specified time at recommended intervals. The custom trays are comfortable to wear and ensure that the gel actually stays in contact with your tooth enamel during treatment.

In every case, we will provide you with care instructions to ensure your comfort and the effectiveness of whichever procedure you select.
