How Invisalign Works
During your initial consultation with one of our dentists, we will take digital impressions of your pearly whites, which will then be used to create your custom aligners. You will then wear these clear, comfortable trays for 20-22 hours a day for a week or two before moving on to a new set of aligners. Each set is designed to shift a small portion of your smile until the whole thing is perfectly straight.
Throughout the course of your treatment, you will be expected to see us every six to eight weeks for a checkup, but don’t worry. These appointments should never last long. We will simply evaluate your progress and give you your new series of aligners.
Once you are finished with your treatment, which takes, on average, anywhere from 12-18 months, you can expect to wear a retainer for a while to prevent your teeth from shifting back into their previous misaligned position.
Benefits of Invisalign
The main benefit of Invisalign is right there in the name – it’s nearly invisible! Many patients choose Invisalign because of its discreetness and flexibility. Some of the other benefits of Invisalign include:
- Takes less time on average than traditional braces
- Clear aligners cause less discomfort and irritation to your teeth and gums than braces
- Comes with zero dietary restrictions, as you can remove the aligners to eat what you want
- Spend less time in the dental chair, since your aligners don’t need to be tightened like braces do
Indications for Invisalign
Despite all its benefits, Invisalign does require more effort and responsibility than traditional braces. This is because the aligners are removable, making it easier to leave them out of your mouth, which can delay your results and increase the overall cost of your treatment. As a result, Invisalign is only recommended for adults and older, more mature teenagers.
It’s also crucial that your oral health is in good shape before undergoing Invisalign treatment. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, we’ll have to get those issues squared away first.
Understanding the Cost of Invisalign
Keep in mind that there is no “set” price of Invisalign. This is because every patient is different, and everyone has different needs that must be met during treatment that will influence the final cost. Some of the factors that affect your treatment cost might include:
- Any preliminary dental work that needs to be completed before starting Invisalign, such as periodontal therapy, fillings, or tooth extraction
- The severity of your misalignment
- The number of aligners you must wear during your treatment
- Your age
- How long your treatment is expected to last

Does Invisalign Treatment Hurt?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners don’t have any sharp metal wires or brackets that can irritate your tongue, cheeks, or lips. However, it’s normal to feel a bit of soreness or sensitivity when first beginning your treatment or starting a new set of aligners. After all, the treatment works by placing constant, gentle pressure on your teeth to shift them into place. Thankfully, any discomfort you experience should pass after just a few days. Starting a new set of aligners right before bed and taking store-bought pain relievers as directed can help you stay comfortable as your teeth straighten. If they continue to bother you, call your dentist in the Woodlands to see if your aligners need to be adjusted.
Will Invisalign Affect How I Talk?
When you first begin to wear your Invisalign aligners, it may sound like you have a slight lisp. To make certain sounds, your tongue is placed against the back of your front teeth or on the roof of your mouth, where the edges of your new aligners are now located. As such, your tongue will need a little bit of time to get used to speaking with this new object in its way. Typically, this only takes about a week. If you want, you can speed up the process by practicing speaking aloud and repeating words like “sixty” or “Mississippi.”
How Do I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?
Keeping your aligners clean is essential for reducing your risk of cavities, preventing bad breath, and keeping them nearly invisible. However, you shouldn’t clean them with your regular toothpaste, as it can scratch and damage them. Instead, rinse them off and brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush every morning and night. Additionally, you should also wash them off with water and brush your teeth before replacing them after eating to prevent staining and tooth decay.
How Often Do I Need to Wear My Aligners?
One of the most convenient advantages of Invisalign aligners is that they’re removable. This means you can continue to enjoy your favorite sports, activities, and foods without worry. However, it’s important to commit to wearing them for 20-22 hours every day. Any less than that and your teeth may begin to shift back, which would increase the time and cost of your treatment. While it may take some time to get in the habit of removing and replacing your aligners as you need to in your day-to-day life, it should become almost second nature in no time!
