Creating a Healthy Foundation for Your Smile
When you think of a healthy smile, you likely initially think of white, cavity-free teeth. However, teeth can’t function without a solid foundation—strong, healthy gums. In fact, did you know that gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is the leading cause of tooth loss around the world? This common, chronic bacterial infection of the soft tissues affects nearly half of American adults and can impact your long-term oral and overall health, but gum disease starts small and simple. If you have red, swollen, or bleeding gums, call our team at Solomon Dental Group for gum disease treatment in The Woodlands, TX. Scaling & Root Planing

If gum disease isn’t found and treated early on, it requires more than just a typical dental cleaning to resolve the problem and eradicate the bacteria. Instead, we can perform scaling, a more intensive cleaning above and below the gum line, and then root planing, a procedure in which we smooth out the rough root texture to facilitate gum reattachment and prevent future reinfection. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, we may have to repeat the process again in another three to four months to make sure that we’ve really eliminated the infection.
Oral Rx Antibiotic Therapy

Unfortunately, we may not be able to reach every pocket of bacteria with scaling and root planing alone. To supplement these treatments, we can also use a topical antibiotic therapy. The medicine is applied around the gum line and allowed to dry. Over time, the antibiotic accesses these challenging areas, killing the harmful bacteria that cause gum disease. Again, about three to four months later, we’ll need to check on your progress and treat another time if necessary.
Laser Gum Therapy

At Solomon Dental Group, we have the added benefit of advanced dental technology to help us address gum disease. Traditionally, infected gum tissue would have to be cut away and pulled back to access the pockets of trapped bacteria and plaque. Through the use of our soft tissue laser, we can painlessly target and remove unsalvageable gum tissue. Utilizing this device also means that you no longer have to worry about sutures or bleeding for a more comfortable, more effective treatment.
