What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps designed to fit snugly over the entire surface of a tooth. They excel at adding protection and strength to teeth that have been damaged by decay or injury, especially when fillings and other procedures are not deemed strong enough. There are several different types of crowns, but porcelain is the most common material due to its extreme durability and uncanny ability to resemble the size, shape, and color of your natural tooth enamel. When properly maintained, dental crowns in The Woodlands can last for several years before needing to be replaced.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Crowns?

Crowns can be used for multiple reasons, such as:
- Fractured or broken teeth
- Rapidly decaying teeth
- Cavities that require more than a simple filling to treat
- Discolored, stained, or misshapen teeth
- Fractured fillings
What Is the Dental Crown Process Like?

After your initial consultation, getting dental crowns typically takes two appointments. The first visit consists of one of our dentists cleaning and taking detailed measurements of your teeth. These impressions will be sent off to a dental lab, where they will be molded into a permanent restoration that will slip over your teeth. This process takes about three weeks. In the meantime, however, we can use these molds to create a temporary plastic crown to place over your tooth to protect it from further injury or decay. Keep in mind that these temporary crowns are not meant to last very long, so it’s imperative that you attend your next appointment. After a few weeks, you will return to our office and your permanent crown will be bonded to your tooth. We will give you detailed instructions on how to take care of your crown that include regular brushing and flossing as well as checkups and cleanings every six months.
